• Call for a european protection of unaccompanied children
  Each year, thousands of foreign children reach the European territory unaccompanied by a legal representative. There are between 50 and 100 000 of them in the European Union, although the exact number is uncertain. These highly vulnerable children, called “unaccompanied children”, usually travel through several European States.
  Nevertheless, the reception and care of these children varies widely from State to State within the European Union. The lack of harmonisation means that protection of unaccompanied minors is variable from country to country, which influences their migration and settlement choices, to the detriment of a real life project. This situation runs counter to the European ambition to build a common space of justice, freedom and security.
  We are calling for a European protection of unaccompanied minors, with the joint efforts of the general councils of the Nord and Pas-de-Calais départements. This call is a means to introduce the European civil society’s positions to the European institutions, as well as to all the decision-makers interested in this matter. This will lead to a true recognition of the fundamental rights that these children are entitled to.
  
  
• Upprop för barnets bästa i asylprocessen
  Vi som skrivit detta upprop arbetar direkt med ensamkommande flyktingbarn och möter dem dagligen. Många av barnen har traumatiska uppbrott bakom sig och vittnesmål om övergrepp är vanligt förekommande. Dessa barn har ett enormt behov av trygghet och omvårdnad. Det är därför avgörande att inom asylprocessen sätta barnets bästa i centrum – något som idag sker alltmer sällan.
  Migrationsverket tillämpar Dublinförordningen, som säger att fall ska prövas i det första landet där en asylsökande satt sin fot. Den första anhalten in i Europa är för många länder som Malta och Italien, kända för ett undermåligt flyktingmottagande. Malta har till och med bett övriga EU-länder om hjälp för att klara av situationen, men trots detta fortsätter Migrationsverket att skicka tillbaka barn dit. Detta anser vi strider emot FN:s barnkonvention, Europakonventionen om mänskliga rättigheter och FN:s flyktingkonvention.
  Konsekvenserna för de barn som nekas rätten att få sina asylskäl prövade i Sverige är märkbara för oss som arbetar nära denna grupp. Flera har efter mottaget beslut från Migrationsverket eller vid rädsla för att skickas tillbaka till ett annat Dublinland uppvisat ångest, apati, självskadebeteende och självmordsbenägenhet. Många avviker från boendet. Dublinförordningen tvingar med andra ord dessa barn återigen till flykt, tillbaka till den osäkra och otrygga vardag detta innebär.

• Upprop: Öppet brev till statsminister Fredrik Reinfeldt angående utvisningen av de apatiska barnen 2009
  Åren 2003-2005 utvisade den socialdemokratiska regeringen många apatiska barn ut ur Sverige och dumpade dem på deras hemländers flygplatser. Barnen var sängliggand, ville inte tala, inte äta. En del togs från sjukhus där de vårdades och låg med sond för att inte avlida.Nu upprepas detta under alliansens styre. Migrationsverkets läkare ringer till barnens läkare och frågar om barnen är "transportabla" och om de kan flygas ut med vanligt flyg eller måste ha ambulansflyg. Man tror inte sina ögon och öron. Förra gången blev det folkstorm och regeringen var tvungen att retirera efter hård kamp. Ska detta upprepas? Accepterar Du, Fredrik Reinfeldt, den här behandlingen av barn så som Göran Persson gjorde den gången? Vi vill inte än en gång läsa om av sorg och skräck förlamade barn som fraktas från Sverige för att hamna på en flygplats i det land där deras och deras föräldrars förtvivlan startade.
  Vår uppmaning till Dig, Fredrik Reinfeldt: Upprepa inte förra regeringens hårdhjärtade behandling som den gången väckte sådan vrede. Ge de apatiska barnen och deras familjer en fristad i vårt land.

27 november 2007 - UNHCR asking for help!

The escalating number of people fleeing the war in Iraq has created an unprecedented urban refugee crisis. We need your help today!

Since 2003, UNHCR has estimated that 4.2 million Iraqis have fled their homes in fear, 2 million to neighboring states including Jordan and Syria. UNHCR has registered 90,000 refugees in Syria alone. Of those, a staggering 10,000 have been diagnosed with cancer. UNHCR believes there are close to a million refugees in Syria that have not yet been registered.

The problem is that Iraqi refugees are "invisible." Only those in the most desperate state of poor health or poverty come to our attention. They are "urban refugees" who do not live in tent cities, but who find abandoned buildings, or if they are lucky, they live with distant relatives.

By early 2007, an estimated two million Iraqi refugees are living in countries of the Middle East. Add in the nearly 2 million displaced people inside Iraq, and the problem is clearly a humanitarian crisis. The number of displaced is the equivalent of more than the entire population of British Columbia. Jordan, Syria and the other countries in the region need help and they need it fast. The Iraqi refugees are rapidly plunging deeper into poverty and despair as they use up whatever meager savings they may have had.

The situation remains critical and we are appealing to all UNHCR supporters worldwide to help us provide for the needs of Iraqi refugees in Syria, Jordan, Turkey and Iran.
