Effect of Online English Learning Game ‘Kahoot’ on L2 Undergraduate Learners in a Malaysian University

Abstract

Gaming, in conjunction with innovative education, is gaining traction as a means of motivating and involving learners in their intercultural learning process. Vast research supports the relationship between learning games and increased motivation and connection. Learning games are a promising technique for aiding the acquisition of a language. This study was planned as a descriptive qualitative study, with data collected through brief questions on using the Kahoot online programme in English schools. This study aims to examine learners' interests and enhance the dynamic behaviour of the classes by integrating Kahoot in the English classroom to enhance activities connected to vocabulary identification. The study used phenomenological investigations using a sample of 31 University Utara Malaysia students. It collected data on the learners' impressions using an open-ended questionnaire. The data from the surveys were evaluated qualitatively through interviews. The findings indicated that Kahoot might boost student learning accomplishments, demonstrating a considerable rise in English learning in terms of worth. As a result, it is concluded that it is beneficial for learners in terms of assisting them in learning English.

Yasmina Aidoune is a Ph.D. student in Applied linguistics from the School of Languages, Civilisation, and Philosophy, Universiti Utara Malaysia, sintok. I did my Master's professional in translation & interpretation at the University Abderrahmane Mira, Bejaia, where I was teaching a translation course using three languages (English, French & Arabic).

I was a translator and interpreter for the direction of tourism and crafts. I translated, proofread, and edited different documents (contracts, pressarticles, business correspondence…) from and into English, French, and Arabic. I was interpreted into English, French, and Arabic by some international companies. I attended and presented at many international conferences and seminars. I am interested in gaming and the relationship of online games with teaching and learning, especially teaching and learning specialized vocabulary, for example, learning and teaching vocabulary knowledge using online games.

Dr. Nur Rasyidah Mohd Nordin obtained her Ph.D. in English Language Studies from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Currently, she is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Languages, Civilisation & Philosophy at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), where she teaches postgraduate courses in Applied Linguistics. Her teaching career began as a part-time English language instructor during her undergraduate degree at the Language Centre at UUM. Her area of interest includes specialized vocabulary, corpus study, L2 writing, and sociolinguistics. She has published a chapter in books and journals indexed in Scopus and WOS and modules for the I am Ready Programme (MRyD) and Graduate Employability Enhancement Programme (G2E). She was the editor and translator for the Kedah Civil Service (KCS) coffee table book. She has also presented papers in international seminars and conferences and delivered a few sessions as a Keynote speaker and panelist.

Manvender Kaur a/p Sarjit Singh is an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics at Universiti Utara Malaysia. Dr. Manvender Kaur a/p Sarjit Singh is currently a Senior Lecturer in SLCP, CAS, Universiti Utara Malaysia. She graduated with B.Edu (Hons.) (TESL) from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), M.Ed. (TESL) and a Ph. D (TESL) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). During her Mmaster'research, she conducted a training needs analysis on English language use and requirements. She completed her master's dissertation entitled: A Training Needs Analysis: A Case Study of Front Line Customs Officers at Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar, Tanjung Kupang, Johor. During her PhPhDesearch, she conducted a corpus-based genre analysis of the written communication prepared by professionals in the Malaysian petroleum industry and developed a rhetorical model for the written work procedures from the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) department of the selected company.
